Today’s EAT destination is Shango Bistro, located on Main St. in Buffalo, NY. This soulful bistro and wine bar is a great brunch and special event location. Embodying the spirit of New Orleans, it is everything a local neighborhood bistro should be – playful, with charming décor and a friendly menu from serious local farmers.
Begin the Shango experience with Chicken and Andouille sausage gumbo and white rice. It may be made with ingredients from a local farm but it tastes like you’re in the heart of the French Quarter. Pan seared Kurobuta pork belly with apple slaw and five-pepper glaze will leave your mouth wanting more. For a bit of Asian fusion, try the avocado spring rolls with sun-dried tomatoes, roasted corn, cilantro pecan pesto, and chili pepper garlic sauce and seaweed salad.
From Big Easy classics like Po-Boys, Creole Bouillabaisse, and Meatloaf, to twists on favorites, like Blackened Loch Duart Salmon, Mac and Cheese with smoked Gouda, goat cheese, cheddar, and a panko rosemary crust. Or taste the Braised Pork Shank with a red chili reduction.
Shango also has an impressive wine list, with 170 options, including a 2008 Syrah from Arrowhead Spring Vineyards on the Niagara Wine Trail. Lush berry plays with a perfect balance of vanilla and oak with white pepper on the palate, and pears well with any of Shango’s hearty dishes.
Beer is also an option, including the Flying Bison Lager; it’s an even beer with a soft, clean finish, and pairs well with salads, mild cheeses or alone in a pint at the bar.
Ending a meal at Shango with an order of the house special of Bananas Foster, bananas sautéed in a caramel rum sauce served over vanilla ice cream and paired with an ice wine or port, completes the experience.
The back room at Shango is a perfect place for large gatherings or special dining occasions, and brunch is taken seriously with French pressed coffee.
